MAY - our anniversary month!

Let's talk about the making of this establishment, originally known as Rest Haven Motel, DBA (doing business as) The Usonian Inn LLC, we are trying to preserve all its original elements and features. Here is a brief historic facts!

The talk and planning and all that, started in 1948.

J. Carry Caraway, formerly of Taliesin and living in Clyde at the time was the architect for the building.
Back then, it took longer to have a property design and build then in the 21st century. Kraemer Bros.  of Plain was designated to take on the project of building.

Here is a picture of the construction crew

The motel known as "Rest Haven" will be completed in 1952 and in operation by May 15th

The motel was the first highway lodging property placed between Madison and La Crosse on Highway 14.  That is a big stretch of 126 miles.

"Spring Green's Newest business enterprise, a modern, 10-unit motel near the intersection of Highways 14 and 23 a half mile northeast of the village, has been completed and was opened last week by the owners, Mr. and Mrs John Michels"

"A tow-story home for the Michels family forms the center of the structure, and long, low wings on either side house the motel units."
Home News Spring Green WI May 15,1952

Once, more recent, an architect told us that the architecture of the structure looks worm and makes it very welcoming, like two open arms ready to hug you!

"The long, flat roof of the motel can be used by the Michels family as a terrace for outdoor living.
Each spacious room of the motel has its own bathroom, indirect lighting, radiant heating, and furnishing of modern design.
Within a week after it had opened for business, the motel owners had accommodated visitors from six states, and one of their overnight guests was Bob McGrath who plays with the Brooklyn Dodgers."

Looking Ahead

Soon, The Usonian Inn LLC will face a historic moment, in more than one way! We are greatly excited about the possibilities inherent in becoming one of the historic establishments listed on the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places, and very soon on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is a chance to re-emphasize the beauty and importance of an ORGANIC architecture, prairie style Frank Lloyd Wright inspired design, by taking a step forward. We look forward to the opportunity to work on preserving the integrity of the building (which we like to call home), and to assist in realizing this vision – becoming a nationally recognized historic place, and be known nationwide.

As a result of some good hours of work involving phone conversations, appointments, meetings, and picture submissions to the right authorities, at this time we have our hopes raised by clear signs that the process of achieving our goal is advancing in the right direction!

We are going forward to becoming a national recognized historic place. We are paying the fees to an accredited Historian to write the report to be presented before Wisconsin Historic Preservation Review Board. And patience with the rest of the process is as good as gold in a bank!

The Interior Design - starting phase

There is always only so much a proprietor can do; this life, a hotel owner life is full of surprises, interruption,  multitasking,  start more projects at once, take reservations, make phone calls...

One of the so called "Small Project" for the past winter was to work on the Interior Design; changing a few things and bringing some colors to the room was partially though about for different reasons.

The old had to go to make room for the new; we started with the beds' covers

We already concluded that the reading chairs were a too light color and the wear was already showing too much.

With the help of a skilled good friend, I was able to obtain a much better looking reading chairs that will not show as much or easy the stains ans still be comfortable and fitting in.

This of course is taking time and yet we made the room like having new furniture and being a new place all together.

It is a matter of days now to bring  this project to an end. We will follow with a different post when that is accomplished.

A DAY LIKE NO OTHER

I've lived through different season, travel different paths going through many states, and I can recall  - Wyoming, and for a good reason! Driving in Wyoming wasn't fun at all; it was a hot summer and we had to drive at night, and it happened that our AC broke in the car after a tire hit our Toyota Previa,  my lovely car at the time, - and with all windows down, we hardly made it through....

It was windy, I mean really windy - the kind we never experience before; the winds blew all night long,  a very hot windy storm.

Today, we had the weirdest weather ever; we had our share of windy days in the past, however, TODAY - it was very unforgettable;

WKOWTV reported "Wind gusts peaked between about 40 and 45 miles an hour this afternoon; although, Monroe reported a 51 mph wind gust at 4 pm!  The wind, though, will quickly diminish after sunset. ......... Have a good evening!Last update by Chief Meteorologist Bob Lindmeier at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5th."

These area mentioned above are in our immediate vicinity !

So, I will be attaching some pictures here dust storm pictures

and then i took some more pictures with the sunset and more clouds:

GREAT NEWS Emerging!!!

As far as it goes, we all like to catch a deal when we go shopping, when we book a flight and also when we reserve a hotel room.

We considered for the past season to offer a small discount to the members of AAA, AARP,  and to those that are paying cash - WITH 2 NIGHTS STAY ONLY;  reservation system requires for us to have a credit card on file.

Reaching that decision we introduced a WEEKEND Offer starting this season!

Letting the Old go Making room for the New

We are coloring our rooms, somehow.

The new bed covers are here and they look cheerful. A little color - or, i should say, rather a plain color on the bed makes the room look so much better, even roomier.

It was a fun experience to be changing the Old with something New, better and improved.

It was a great feeling to be able to donate to a charity all the old stuff and at least make it of use for some people in need.

Cancellation policy at small properties

I would expect everyone to be a little considerate and be aware of our cancellation policy.

Assumption doesn't work to well with such a large industry; this involves a little of your time and you can avoid any inconvenience that might arise at a later time.

"Cancellation policies tend to be stricter at small B&Bs than at big hotels, and with good reason, said Bill Carroll, senior lecturer at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

Cancel your reservation at a four-room B&B at the last minute, and the innkeepers lose 25% of the night's income, compared with just one-half percent at a 200-room hotel, Carroll said.

Although policies vary widely, Sandy Soule, vice president for marketing at BedandBreakfast.com, a marketing service for nearly 10,000 B&Bs, said many B&Bs charge one night's rate or 50% of the total stay -- whichever is more -- if you cancel less than a week before your stay."
